Science Magnet is proud of Megan Crawford!
To the Science Magnet Board and JAMS science teachers:
I’m Megan Crawford, a John Adams Alumna from the class of 2020. I’ve been a girl scout in Troop 15505 for 10 years, and now I’m completing my Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is a project that the scout designs and executes with community service in order to gain leadership, responsibility, ethical consciousness, time management, and much more. I designed my project in order to boost John Adams Students’ interest in math by teaching them real world situations. So, on the two days before Thanksgiving, I taught Ms. Jurewicz’s 8th grade classes about the fibonacci sequence, a pattern found everywhere in nature, and 3D printing, which we use to create things in the world around us.
To measure my success, I conducted a survey before and after the lessons. I found that 50% of students find math a 7 or higher out of 10 for difficulty. When students were asked how they define math, “numbers” and “boring” were the 2 most common answers. However, after my lessons, students exhibited a significant improvement: the common answers included “numbers across all parts of life,” “a skill we use every day to get through our lives,” and “the transcript of life.” Math has changed my life because I use it every day, and I love finding it in all parts of life, and I hope the relationship between students and math improves significantly; I hope my project started that change. Thank you,
Megan Crawford, JAMS Class of 2020
About Us
The Magnet has been in existence since 1992. Started out with 60 students and an idea! All students at JAMS are enrolled in the science magnet, and have the opportunity to participate in our seminars. We are financially supported by the district as well as by fundraising through the Science Magnet.
The Santa Monica Science Magnet is where adventure, learning, and fun come together to give your child a head start in areas like chemistry, physics, health, and the environment.
More than just classwork -- the Science Magnet includes a week long Summer institute, seminars on many fascinating subjects each semester, and family participation trips to places like Morro Bay and Joshua Tree.
