8th Grade Trip * - There will be no Japan trip in Summer 2020 due to the Olympics being held close to our trip travel time.

Due to overwhelming demand we will only be accepting applications from 8th grade students for the Japan trip moving forward.

Approximate 2021 trip dates for the Japan trip is end of June- beginning of July. 

Approximate cost will be $3000-$3500 depending upon final trip costs and fundraising. All students who are eligible regardless of finances should apply, we will be approaching the City Council for funds again this year.

You must have been completely the application process and have been selected to participate in this trip. Payments do not guarantee placement.



Approximate trip dates for the Japan trip is end of June- beginning of July 2020.

8th Grade applicants must be in good standing. Up to 12 students will be selected. Science teachers will provide a recommendation directly to the teacher organizing the trip.

Students interested in participating in the Japan trip must fill out and submit the attached application (which includes a 250-word essay) The application committee will review each application and gather information and recommendations from teachers and administrators regarding grades, work habits and citizenship of each applicant. After applications are reviewed, qualified applicants will be invited to interview. Upon completion of the interview process, 12 students will be selected. Please note that past or future hosting of a Kizugawa Student is not a requirement or an advantage in the selection process.

Estimated cost of the trip: Approximately $3,500 per student. The total cost will depend on the length of stay and cities visited. Part of the time will be spent in Kizugawa/Kyoto where students will stay with host families for three days.

Full or partial financial aid is available to eligible students.

This is a fast-paced, highly active and academic school trip. Travelers are expected to keep up with the group and all of the JAMS school rules apply. Each day begins roughly at 6:30am and ends at 9pm. Weather is in the 80s and 90s with very high humidity. Travelers will be hiking and expected to keep up with the group at a steady pace. Each traveler must be able to manage his/her own luggage and be responsible for backpacks, water, etc. Student Travelers will also be expected to entertain the Kizugawa host families. They need to prepare and perform a song, mini-skit or dance performance for the Kizugawa hosts.

Student travelers will be required to write two essays summarizing their experience in Japan. One 250 word essay will be sent to the city of Kizugawa. One 150-word essay will be sent to the city of Fujinomiya. Each essay is due within two weeks after returning from the trip.

Your child is not required to learn Japanese, although picking up a few basic phrases is encouraged. Speaking Japanese is not a requirement or an advantage in the selection process.

Before traveling, your child will need to have a valid US Passport or a valid Passport with a current visa, temporary or permanent residency to facilitate entry back into the US.
